What are they? They are air cannons that are used for materials testing. Our clients use them for testing the structural integrity of things like airplane canopies and jet engines. This kind of extremely important research is done daily by scientists and engineers at government and university research agencies.
To carry out the tests, researchers send a projectile traveling at high speed down the long tube you see in the photos, where it impacts the subject of the test. Researchers use the results of their tests to make design improvements.
